Over the past few years, the Tavria organization has made its foray into the area of club-owned costumes.
Our costume committee, through its dedication and imagination, has created, and continues to create, costumes for use at virtually every level of the organization, including: Poltavsky Pokuttia Bukovina Volyn Pleskatch Transcarpathian Pollissia Hutzul Contemporary We have recently acquired Lemko costuming direct from the Ukraine. The organization believes that club-owned costuming creates opportunities for dancers to experience multiple regions of Ukraine without having to incur the expense of owning their own costumes for each region. This is especially important at the senior levels of the organization, where a dancer may learn dances from four regions or more. Our costume committee members are always ready to answer any questions in regard to our costuming. Hutzul Panel Construction
The woven pattern runs horizontally, so be sure to have the panel oriented correctly before starting. Make 4 1-inch darts on what will be the front panel, each dart 5" long. Make 4 1-inch darts on what will be the back panel, each dart 6" long. You can not machine stitch directly on the panels as the material may snag and become damaged. Pin seam binding tape on the front and back side of each dart and sew through the seam binding tape.
The panels should overlap approximately 2" at the waist. Fold in the sides of each panel until the proper overlap has been achieved. Then hand stitch the sides down. Do no stitch too tightly.
The panel length should be 3" above the hem of the slip. Note - the hem of the finished slip is 3", so the panel length will be at the top of the hem. Next attach a tie to the top of the panels. Hockey shoe laces work great as a tie. You will need 2 laces for each panel. Cut the ends of one end of the laces and sew them together. Zigzag the laces to the inside top of each panel. This will prevent the waist from stretching.
Each panel is trimmed with a braid of 4-ply yarn. The yard colours are green, yellow and orange. Braid 2 strands of each color together. The braid has to be long enough to go around the sides and bottom, plus about 10" extra (to allow for growth and resizing). Hand stitch the braid to the panel and tack the excess braid to the seam binding on the backside of the panel.
Finally, label each panel with the dancers' first and last name. The label can be placed on the laces at the waist. Note - The back panel goes on first and then the front panel. Tuck the laces under the panel. ![]() |
